Review

Aussie rockers Jet cite three major influences on their music: AC/DC, the Beatles, and Paul McCartney. Listening to GET BORN, I’m tempted to add a few others: early Rolling Stones, the Easy Beats, and the Standells. Jet captures the excitement and immediacy of garage band rock without sounding studied or derivative. Better still, there’s more to this group than just catchy riffs and soulful wailings.

The opening “Last Chance” pays homage to AC/DC form the monolithic riffs to Nic Cester’s Bon Scott - inspired growling. This tune leads directly into “Are You Gonna Be My Girl,” Jet’s monster radio hit that’s pure 60s garage done right. But the boys have a softer side as well. The ballads “Look What You’ve Done” and “Radio Song” have some Beatlesque harmonies and piano voicings while still maintaining some originality.

Although there’s a lot here that reminds me of other (earlier) groups, this is one solid album. Jet has absorbed the vocabulary of some of some of rock’s masters and used it to create a style all their own. A lesser group might be able to pull off a rocker like “Roll Over DJ” (featuring Billy Pristine), but couldn’t switch gears for the old-school country rocker COME AROUND AGAIN, and then switch back to the blasting “Take It Or Leave It” with Cam Muncy channeling early 60s Lennon on guitar.

Jet’s sound is spare and tight. No electronic tricks here. Just drums, guitar, bass and an occasional piano. A bit more polished than 60s garage bands, Jet still maintains a spontaneity on every track that too often gets processed out by most bands these days. Retro? No. Just getting back to basics for fresh inspiration. GET BORN will be on my top nine for 2004.
